All this metal contacting other metal will create a lot of heat in the engine. Oil is the lubricant which normally keeps this heat to a minimum by cooling off the components. If you want to know for sure if you have a low oil engine oil level not when engine on, use the oil dipstick to check your oil level. Make sure that your engine has been turned off and your car is parked on level ground to get an accurate reading. If the dipstick shows that you have less oil than the minimum mark, then it means you need to add more oil.

The opposite of having too much oil in your engine can also cause issues and doing a dipstick engine oil level not when engine on will also show that. Be aware that many newer cars such as Audis no longer have a dipstick under the hood. Instead, sensors are used to check the amount and condition of your motor oil. While this is handy, a problem with a faulty sensor can occur which prevents you from knowing of a low oil condition.

Caring for your vehicle should be among your top priorities. Inspect your engine oil every time you fill your gas tank, or at least once a month. It is also important to have an oil change sticker placed on the inside of your windshield to remind you when your next oil change is due. In order to inspect the engine oil level correctly, you need to make sure the vehicle is parked on a fairly level location, shut the engine off, open the hood, allow the oil to engine oil level not when engine on back into the engine oil pan for a few minutes, then locate the engine oil dipstick which usually has a bright yellow handle that reads "engine oil".

The engine oil level should be in the cross hatch section and at or slightly below the full mark when the engine is cool. If the engine oil is low, it could indicate the engine is either leaking or consuming oil.
